Fall Activities To Do This Weekend

Family-friendly activities and home prep for the season

Fall is here! You know what that means, changing leaves, cider mills, fall activities, cooler weather and fall home maintenance + decor (love it!). Today, we’re sharing with you fall-inspired activities you can do this weekend with your family. Plan on staying home? We also have tips and ideas to get your home ready for the change of season, plus some festive decor inspiration!

Fall Events + Activities:

  • One event this year that has been updated to adhere to “socially distancing” guidelines, is this Michigan Forest that turns into a haunted light show. Located in Commerce Township, this interactive sensory forest light show, known as Glenlore Trails, will transform into a family-friendly haunted forest. The Halloween-themed trail will run from Saturday, Oct.10 through Sunday, November 29. Tickets are $25 for adults, $12 for ages 3-12, and under 3 are free.
  • The Greenfield Village Hallowe’en event in Dearborn is a must see, and they’re celebrating 40 years! The annual family-friendly attraction will feature frightening train rides, a jack-o-lantern trail with over 1,000 pumpkins on display creating an illuminated path and appearances by more than 50 storybook characters. Fall treats, hot beverages, and craft beer will also be available for purchase. Hallowe’en at Greenfield Village will take place from 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 8-11, 15-18, 22-25, and 29-31.
  • Head to a cider mill! There is nothing  better than fresh cider and donuts in the fall. No matter where you live, there are plenty of options available! Some of our favorites include:
    • Yates Cider Mill in Rochester, MI. They are even offering a drive-through donut and cider pickup to ensure  COVID safety measures.
    • Parmenter’s Cider Mill in Northville, MI. This fan favorite also offers a drive through service right now. But, if you’d prefer to hang out and enjoy your cider and donuts  outside, the Northville winery and brewery is open right next door where you can also buy the same donuts, ciders, brews and bonus, they have live music on Sundays!
    • Blakes Cider Mill in Armada, MI. Blakes is not only known for their homemade donuts, but their array of activities to do at their cider mill. From apple picking to the tasting room, you can plan to spend a few hours here with your family or friends!
    • Franklin Cider Mill in Bloomfield Hills. They are known for their one-of-a-kind historical charm. They pride themselves on their family-friendly atmosphere and exceptional service. You can find cider, donuts and a variety of apples and products. They even offer online ordering!

Fall Home Maintenance + Decor:

  • Start with the exterior of your home. Inspect and clean both gutters and downspouts. Make sure all drainage areas are unblocked by leaves and debris and consider installing gutter guards to make the job a lot easier. While you’re at it, it’s worth inspecting the roof for normal wear and tear prior to colder weather, in case it’s in need of any repairs.
  • Compost your fall leaves! As the leaves change colors, and inevitably begin to fall, use those fallen leaves to create a compost for your garden. This is a budget friendly and easy way to clean those leaves and create free plant compost. According to DIY Network, “Composted leaves contain leaf mold, which has high amounts of calcium and magnesium, both important to healthy plant growth. Leaf mold also retains moisture that, when added to garden soil, helps young plants stay hydrated.” Sounds like a win-win to us!
  • Create DIY fall accent pieces. Be the envy of your neighbors by displaying the beautiful fall colors on your front door by making a DIY fall wreath. You can utilize things you may already have around your home to create an array of wreaths. From round to rectangular shapes, using tiny pumpkins, fresh florals, and utilizing upcycled materials, the options are endless! You can also use your fall wreath to make a statement in your entryway by displaying your creation inside!
