Celebrate Independence Day with Fireworks, Events, and More

The Fourth of July is here again! Whether you’re looking for local fireworks, outdoor adventure, or classic American food, here’s DOBI’s guide to making the most out of everyone’s favorite summer holiday:

Spend Time Near the Water

Here in metro Detroit, we’re blessed to have so many options when it comes to being near the water. If you’re downtown, check out the Detroit International RiverWalk for some water views, parks and gardens. There are several parks and restaurants around the lake to enjoy. Kensington Metropark has a few beaches to get you near the water, including Maple Beach and Martindale Beach. Check their website to see if paddleboat or kayak rentals are available. Or take a cruise down the Huron River in lower Wayne County by renting a kayak at Atwater Paddles in Flat Rock.

Roadtrip to northern michigan

Feeling adventurous? Head up to Traverse City where the main attraction in early July is the National Cherry Festival. It spans from July 2nd to July 9th and is all about celebrating and promoting cherries, community involvement, and the Grand Traverse region.

On the Fourth, you’ll be able to catch some rides at Arnold’s Amusements, grab a refreshing drink at the beer tent, take your little ones to the Kid’s Club, and close out your holiday by watching the National Cherry Festival fireworks display over West Grand Traverse Bay after sunset.

There’s something special about a picnic on a Michigan summer day. Pack up your picnic lunch (or just order carryout, we won’t judge) and head to one of Metro Detroit’s beautiful parks. You can take your pick from many of the local parks in your area, or head to Belle Isle for views of downtown, the Conservancy, or the James Scott Fountain.

What is summer in Detroit without an incredible fireworks display? Metro Detroit has loads of fireworks shows throughout the summer. Watch as firecrackers light up the city skyline, burst over Comerica Park, illuminate the river, or crackle over Greenfield Village.

Enjoy live music, food vendors, and family fun at area festivals. This summer is the perfect time to stretch out on a blanket, stare up at the sky and watch a dazzling light show across many Metro Detroit locations. Here are a few of our picks to check out:

Rochester Hills Festival of the Hills: Wednesday, June 29, 2022
Enjoy family-friendly musical entertainment, food vendors, and Oakland County’s largest fireworks show.

Salute to America: Thursday, June 30 through Sunday, July 3, 2022 at Greenfield Village.
Stroll through Greenfield Village and listen to live music from America’s past, including choral singing, ragtime, jazz, and more. Dusk is the time to set up a blanket on the Village Green and enjoy an American tribute by Detroit Symphony Orchestra. The magical historical evening will have a stunning finale with the “1812” Overture performance, cannon fire, and fireworks show.

Lake Erie Metropark Fireworks: Sunday, July 3, 2022 at Lake Erie Metropark.
Enjoy a night in the open air with live music beginning at 6 pm and ending with a stunning fireworks display.

Freedom Festival Fireworks: Monday, July 4, 2022 at Clawson Park.
The Freedom Festival is a fun-filled day starting with a Firecracker run in the morning, followed by a parade, arts and craft fair, food trucks, and ending with fireworks.

Comerica Park Friday Night Fireworks: Friday nights with home games throughout the summer at Comerica Park. Check the schedule for Friday night games with fireworks following the game. It’s a fantastic fireworks display you can catch throughout the summer.
